Sometimes I get tired. I am in my late fifties. I get tired. I have CKD (kidney disease). I get tired. If I do physical work, I get tired. If I lack sleep, I get tired. When I am depressed or stressed, I get tired.
But sometimes I get sleepy. Maybe it is too early in the morning or I haven’t recovered from something, or again, I’m depressed. I take caffeine, or I take a walk–get some exercise. I listen to upbeat music. Sometimes I even dance around the room to the sounds of James Brown.
But today, I needed to sleep. I’d been down about something, I’d done physical work and I’d had a rough time the day before. I needed to sleep.
I should have felt a little guilty because my wife has more reason to need sleep than I do, but when I need to sleep, and it is not the end of the day, I usually really need to sleep, even if it is only for twenty minutes or so.
Once my body has that respite, I feel much better. I might be tired or sleepy, but if I get a short nap, my body reaches into some unknown well of power and I am okay.
I took a short nap today and feel refreshed. I’m not feeling like running a marathon or doing a big chore, but the nap did the trick. Now I can be productive or relax. I shouldn’t need to sleep until bedtime.
