So, I love to get birthday presents and even at my advanced age, I enjoy my own annual, ‘Yep, I’m a bit older and hopefully not dumber, day’.

I was thinking about the upcoming birthdays of family members, and was looking forward to getting them gifts, but recalled that it is important to get people things that bless them, not what you want to give them.

So I’m stymied, because as my Pastor noted today, it is more blessed to give than to receive. At least, I find joy in giving. Giving of my time and money brings me contentment. And it could help the ones I give to.

God wants to pour out blessings on those who give, and as our other guest speaker mentioned, we aren’t to give out of a sense of guilt or obligation; that would taint the gift.

God doesn’t need our gifts. Giving time, money, gifts, forgiveness blesses the giver, but to give what you’d like, instead of what they’d like, or to give because you feel obligated, is not at the heart of giving.

Sound complicated? It can be, but if we surrender our will to God, He will make this complex animal a simple easy thing. Easy for me? No, but I’m seeking His will.
