Today I got to attend a church event, a men’s BBQ.

I like our men’s breakfasts and barbecues, not just for the delicious food, but the soul food. Yes, I do like cornbread and collard greens, but Jesus said He had food the disciples did not know about.

They probably thought the Father sent him a Heavenly care package and that he might be holding out on them, but then he said that his food was to do the will of His Father.

I got to meet with one man I’m friends with, two men I’m acquainted with, and a man who was younger than me. There were slips of paper with icebreakers written on them, and also a sheet of questions about the messages to be deliver.

After our opening chit chat, and during the luncheon, there were three speakers: One spoke about letting God guide you when there was trouble (at work in this instance), and not to fret about what you are going to say.

The second man spoke about women, noting his theory which I support, that they are one of God’s most mysterious creatures, and that learning them, a lifelong endeavor, is key to making them feel loved and heard. A mammoth and worthy challenge.

The third guy spoke about spiritual gifts, recounting his desire to preach, but revealing he learned his talent was organization. He said we need to learn our gift, use it to God’s glory and others’ benefit, and that we should enjoy what we do or consider change.

After each segment, each table of men got to discuss the segment amongst themselves. When the talks were ended, our pastor got up to speak, and told us how important it is to know God intimately.

If I know God in this way, it is largely through trials, but I also delight in singing, prayer and intercession, when I am able to do those things.

How do you enjoy God?

I’m grateful for our church’s men’s meetings.
