I heard about the new film about Ben Franklin and preacher George Whitefield, and I was excited. It looked like a rousing drama, and then I noticed it was directed by a past colleague from my days in the theater. I certainly never rose to this degree of success or near it as he has, but to see someone I used to work with who now runs Sight & Sound theaters now direct a feature film was definitely exciting.
I invited a good friend to see the movie, and at first I feared it would be a trite Christian film. Don’t get me wrong, I am a believer, but sometimes movies of faith lack quality of production. This movie started out seeming like it might not get going, but I reminded myself I was jaded by television and movies of today that are cynical if slick. I gave the film my open attention, and it reached out and pulled me in and never let go.
I hope you will go see A Great Awakening, but don’t put it off, because it’s only in the theaters for a week or so. The story is amazing, the acting excellent, and the period costumes and settings are top notch. But it’s the story you’ll remember, how it made you feel, and if you aren’t yet a believer, it just might change your mind.
